“I Am Love”
*** 1/2 (out of 4)
Luca Guadagnino’s stunning melodrama about a monied Milanese family offers glimpses into the seductions of globalization. But it’s the simmmering interpersonal that rules when a gifted chef enters the Recchi’s sphere, wooing in different ways scion Edo and matriarch Emma (Tilda Swinton). Some may find Emma Recchi’s swoon dive a bit much: think Nora Roberts garnished with Italian parsley. But Swinton is a risk-taker. Yes, Emma becomes undone, but what verve, what operatic nerve. Stunning visuals. Brilliant repurposing of composer John Adams’ music, with his blessing. R. 2 hours. Lisa Kennedy
