Police say a man is recovering at Denver Health Medical Center after being stabbed in the neck several times Wednesday night when he tried to help a woman thrown from a car during a domestic assault.

Denver police said the man saw a woman being thrown from a car at 10:35 p.m. near the intersection of West 46th Avenue and Vrain Street.

When the man went to help the woman, another man stabbed him, police said.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken to Denver Health, where he was listed in serious condition.

Police said they arrested the suspect, 27-year-old Brent Ward, near Parker Road and East Mississippi Avenue after a brief chase.

Ward faces charges of first-degree assault with a deadly weapon, knowing and reckless assault causing injury and vehicular eluding.

Police are calling the man who tried to help a hero.

“A citizen risked his life coming to the aid of another citizen,” said Lt. Matt Murray, a Denver police spokesman. “We appreciate and admire what he did and others who come to the aid of others during their time of need.”

Police plan to honor him at an awards ceremony next week.
