Getting your player ready...

Money isn’t the issue.

It seems like since the end of the Mike Shanahan era, the purse strings have been harder to pull open with the Broncos. You have to spend money to win. Let’s get cornerback Champ Bailey on board. If owners such as Pat Bowlen decide not to pay star players and go with an 18-game schedule, a 9-9 record will not be conducive to greater fan interest. Maybe the Broncos can ‘in-source’ jobs from China. Now there’s a cheap labor pool.

Dennis, Mead

Kiz: Hey, thanks a billion. Kickin’ It Headquarters will be bombarded by angry e-mails from my (former) friends in China. If you’re asking me, money was the No. 1 reason Shanahan’s long marriage with the Broncos broke up. Of course, Denver generously gave Elvis Dumervil a contract extension with more than $40 million guaranteed. And what’s the first thing the linebacker did? He got hurt. I can’t help but think Doom’s bad luck now hurts Bailey’s quest to get paid.

Hey, man, get a clue.

Toughness starts with the coach. Josh McDaniels will never move to the top level. He makes big, bold mistakes that point to a lack of intelligence. He will never have the smarts of Shanahan or the toughness of Dan Reeves. I would hate to be a Broncos player and know I have no hope for years. Bailey needs to get out of Denver and salvage what remains of his career.

Terry, Solvang, Calif.

Kiz: Take this free advice for what it’s worth. Remove those replica jerseys for Carmelo Anthony and Bailey from your closet. Post ’em on eBay, at a reasonable price. Say $12.95. Beat the rush.

No, no Knowshon.

I don’t care if McDaniels trades up, down or sideways on draft day, his job is to pick good players. He hasn’t done that. Knowshon Moreno will not be the answer to the ground game. We need an Earl Campbell.

Dale, Golden

Kiz: Campbell is 55 years old. And know what? The old Tyler Rose might still be Denver’s best option to carry the rock in the red zone.

Nice guys don’t make playoffs.

I don’t think you have to worry about the Broncos ending up on the police blotter, but you won’t have to worry about them finding a spot in the NFL playoffs, either. That’s the price you pay for a choirboy football team. I also think they’re paying the price for Tim Tebow. You can’t have a first-round draft choice holding a clipboard on the sideline.

Larry, Las Vegas

Kiz: If the 32nd-ranked rushing team in the NFL can’t find a way to utilize Tebow as a ball carrier, then maybe the real problem is lack of imagination.

Avs worthy of watching now.

I was a season-ticket holder for the Avalanche, my last few years in the Pepsi Center’s lower tier. Franchise owner Stan Kroenke figured the full houses would last forever, no matter the level of talent he put on the ice. But fans voted with their feet. I got very tired of spending over $200 per game to watch the team play .500 hockey at home. Now we have the hockey version of Todd and the Toddlers. Now it’s Foote and the Freshmen.

Mark, Centennial

Kiz: With our young Avs in first place, it might be a good time for goalie Craig Anderson to inquire about a raise.

College football is a business.

Why not just pay college football players to help eliminate the problem of slimy agents? Everybody else is getting rich on players’ backs, and unless they have access to money from mom and dad, they are below broke. If the schools are so afraid of agents, approve the hire of attorneys, pay them a generous fee from the millions of dollars these students generate and let athletes go to the company lawyers for financial advice. Being a player is a full-time job on a major-college football team.

W.C., Aspen

Kiz: Anybody who thinks educating players is the mission of a major-college football program might as well believe Burger King hires employees to teach them how to become gourmet chefs.

Mr. Hurt: Moreno

And today’s parting shot is a friendly reminder to use my spell-check before the next reference to the Broncos’ oft-injured featured running back.

“Isn’t his name No-show Moreno?”

Dave, Aurora
