Colorado Democratic U.S. Sen. Mark Udall says the U.S. is on the right track in shoring up Afghan society but says America won’t be able to build a 21st-century democracy there.
Udall spoke in a telephone conference Monday after a nine-day trip to Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq.
Udall says Afghan government corruption threatens to undermine the work the U.S. is doing to weaken the Taliban. He also says he supports negotiations with the Taliban, if the timing is right and some conditions are met. He didn’t elaborate.
