A former Cañon City inmate is suing the state prison system in federal court, claiming he vomited blood for more than three days before being allowed to see a doctor last year.

The University of Denver law clinic filed the lawsuit Wednesday on behalf of Matthew Mallory, 29, of Lochbuie, who was released on parole in April after serving five years for car theft and other charges.

He was eventually hospitalized for 10 days and underwent surgery for a “a hole in his intestines the size of a quarter,” according to a news release from the university.

The suit seeks an unspecified amount of damages.
