Arapahoe Basin and Loveland Ski Area have been making snow every chance they get, but they’ve been largely limited to night and early morning hours.

Arapahoe Basin had 17 guns going from 5-11 a.m. Tuesday morning, with temperatures favorable at 21 degrees — “the coldest night yet,” Arapahoe Basin spokeswoman Leigh Hierholzer said.

She and Loveland Ski Area spokesman John Sellers said the snow that’s been made hasn’t been melting. However, not making snow during the day slows progress toward an opening day.

Sellers said Loveland’s upper mountain is mostly finished, so workers are spreading the snow there. Meanwhile, guns have been moved and refocused on the lower mountain.

Neither mountain has named an opening day, although both have often opened in October in previous years.

Loveland was first last year, opening Oct. 7.
