Cheyenne Mountain High School graduate Rachael Flatt was third (53.69 points) after the women’s short program Friday at the NHK Trophy competition in Nagoya, Japan. Italy’s Carolina Kostner, a three-time European champion, is first (57.27), with Japan’s Kanako Murakami in second place (56.10). World champion Mao Asada of Japan is eighth.

Flatt had a shaky landing on her opening triple lutz-triple loop combination but was strong the rest of the way.

“I think it was a solid performance given that it’s early in the season,” Flatt said. “I feel pretty good about my chances.”

Olympic silver medalists Meryl Davis and Charlie White of the United States were in first place after the ice dancing short dance.

CC blows lead, game.

The Colorado College hockey team was unable to hold a two-goal lead in a 5-4 road loss to Minnesota State.

The Tigers (2-2-1, 0-1-0 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) outshot the Mavericks (1-1-3, 1-1-1) 43-34, but with 11:35 left in the third period, Minnesota State’s Eriah Hayes scored the game-winning goal, breaking a 4-4 tie.

Colorado College goalie Joe Howe made 16 of his 29 saves in the first period. But he gave up three goals on 10 shots in the second period and two goals on eight shots in the third.

The Tigers will get another chance at the Mavericks today at 6 p.m in Mankato, Minn.

Falcons still winless.

The Air Force hockey team (0-4, 0-2 Atlantic Hockey) blew a two-goal lead and lost 5-3 to American International (1-3, 1-3) at the academy.

The Falcons outshot their opponent 44-21 and held the faceoff advantage 54-23, but the Yellow Jackets were able to score five goals against goalie Jason Torf and the rest of the Falcons’ defense.

The teams will play the second and final game of the series tonight at 7 p.m. at Cadet Ice Arena.

DU lacrosse to face pros.

The University of Denver men’s lacrosse team will play some of the top professional lacrosse players today at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on the DU campus.

“There is no more beautiful venue in collegiate lacrosse than our own Peter Barton Stadium, and I know that our many talented freshmen, as well as our returning veterans, look forward to their first game together,” head coach Bill Tierney said.
