Getting your player ready...

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Several groups are working with the NCAA to find new ways to enforce rules prohibiting improper agent-related benefits for student-athletes, including possible post-NCAA financial penalties that reach into a player’s potential NFL career.

The NFL, NFL Players Association and sports agents are among those involved in talks with the NCAA that have included various proposals.

Chicago-based sports agent Rick Smith, a member of the NCAA panel, said Monday that while discussions are preliminary, new rules could be in place within three to five months. Such rules would likely be enforced primarily by the NFL and the players’ union.

“Something is going to happen,” he said, “and it’s going to happen quickly.”

Dooley: Vols like Germans

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee coach Derek Dooley compared his young, inexperienced football team’s struggles to the German forces during the Allies’ invasion of France in World War II.

Speaking during his weekly media appearance on Monday, Dooley offered a two minute-long description of the confusion caused by the surprise of the American soldiers landing at Omaha Beach on D-Day and the Germans’ slow reaction. Dooley said, “We’re like the Germans in World War II . . . like, ‘Oh, my God, the invasion is coming.’ “

Dooley added that he didn’t “want the German people to get upset at me.”
