NEW YORK — More than 300 boxes of Maya Ange lou’s personal papers, including letters from Malcolm X and James Baldwin as well as several scribbled revisions of the poem “On the Pulse of Morning,” which she wrote to celebrate President Bill Clinton’s 1993 inauguration, will be made public at a New York library, the author said.
The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture will announce the papers’ acquisition this week.
Angelou, 82, said she sought out the Harlem institution as a home for works that include notes for her acclaimed autobiography, “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.” She has authored 31 books of fiction, poetry, nonfiction and children’s literature, as well as a cookbook set for release in December.
