Planned demolition of a portion of the West Alameda Avenue bridge over Interstate 25 will cause overnight closures of all lanes of I-25 in that area for three consecutive nights, beginning Sunday.
Contractors are demolishing the center portion of the old Alameda bridge as part of a project to construct a new, wider span along with other improvements in that area, including widening I-25 under Alameda and improving drainage.
From Sunday through Tuesday, one lane each of northbound and southbound I-25 will close at 8 p.m. each night, with a second lane closing at 9 p.m. and all lanes closing at 11 p.m., according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
All lanes of I-25 at Alameda will reopen by 5:30 a.m. the following morning, CDOT said. During the full closure, northbound I-25 traffic will exit at Broadway and be diverted onto Lincoln Street to Sixth Avenue for a return to I-25.
Southbound I-25 traffic will have to exit at Alameda during the full closure, but CDOT officials recommended that motorists exit earlier for their detour, at Sixth Avenue, to avoid even more delay.
Overnight on Wednesday and Thursday, there will be triple lane closures on both northbound and southbound I-25 near Alameda, beginning at 11 p.m., but some through traffic will be maintained on the highway, CDOT said.
Reconstruction of the Alameda Avenue bridge is part of a $37 million package of improvements in that area funded with federal stimulus dollars. The project is scheduled for completion by September 2012.
