University of Denver golfer Tonje Daffinrud won her first career tournament, shooting a 3-over-par 73 in the third round to tie for first place at the Challenge at Onion Creek in Austin, Texas.
Daffinrud tied with Arkansas-Little Rock’s Megan Vaughn for the win with an overall score of 4-over 214.
In their final tournament of the fall season, the Pioneer women finished the tournament in ninth place, shooting a three-round 902. Iowa State claimed team honors with an 884.
• The University of Colorado women’s golf team shot a final-round 301 to finish fourth at the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio. The Buffs finished six strokes behind Texas Christian, which won the tournament with a 13-over 877.
Colorado’s Jess Wallace placed second after closing with a 213, one stroke behind individual winner Brooke Beeler of TCU. Colorado’s Emily Talley fired a 217 for fourth place.
• The Denver men’s golf team shot a second-round 294 at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif., staying in 12th place heading into today’s final round.
CU’s Russel, Dohn honored.
University of Colorado soccer players Kate Russel, a junior midfielder, and Alex Dohn, a freshman defender, were named to the all-Big 12 Conference second team after a vote of the league’s coaches on Monday. Also, freshman goalkeeper Annie Brunner was named to the all-newcomer team.
• The University of Denver women’s soccer team dominated the Sun Belt Conference awards as five players were named to the first team and the Pioneers swept the major awards.
Kaitlin Bast was named Sun Belt Conference player of the year, Nicholette DiGiacomo was named co-freshman of the year and coach Jeff Hooker was named coach of the year.
Bast, DiGiacomo, Jessie Rogers, Katy Van Lieshout and goaltender Lara Campbell all were named to the conference first team, while Kalie Vaughn and Bria Beardsley were named to the second team.
• Northern Colorado women’s soccer player Danielle Birdsall was named the Big Sky Conference offensive most valuable player. Birdsall scored eight goals with three assists to lead a Bears offense that ranked first in the conference in shots (318) and tied for the lead in goals (31).
In addition to Birdsall, midfielder Kimmie Feidler was named to the all-conference first team, and Aundreaha Martinez and Ariel Cook were both named to the second team.
• Colorado College soccer player Tiffany Brown was named to the all-Conference USA women’s soccer team for the second consecutive season.
Brown, who led the Tigers in scoring for the third time in four years, was joined by defender Sierra Keeler and goaltender Caitlin Hulyo, who were both named to the second team. Sophomore forward Brittney Lyman was voted to the third team.
Boulder’s Bison wins hockey qualifier.
The Boulder Hockey Club Bison defeated the University of Denver Jr. Pioneers 2-1 in the championship game Monday night at the Pepsi Center to win the 2010 Colorado Avalanche Quebec qualifier tournament.
The Bison scored the game-winning goal with four seconds remaining in the third period to win the game. Boulder will now be the designated Colorado Avalanche Pee Wee team for the 2010-11 season and will represent the Avalanche in the 52nd Quebec International Pee Wee Tournament in February.
