DENVER—Republican Walker Stapleton has taken the lead over Democratic incumbent Cary Kennedy in the Colorado treasurer’s race.

Stapleton, a real estate investor, led 52 to 48 percent Tuesday night with 62 percent of the projected vote counted. He won the GOP nomination by narrowly beating J.J. Ament in the August primary.

Stapleton criticized Kennedy for not speaking up about problems with the pension fund for state and local government employees.

Kennedy was first elected in 2006. She also was policy director for former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff.

Weeks before the election, Stapleton faced accusations that he was involved in a hit-and-run accident in San Francisco in 1999. Stapleton insisted he didn’t try to leave the accident scene.
