Republican Scott Tipton is poised to unseat Democrat John Salazar in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District.

The pair squared off in 2006 duel, when voters nationally rejected the GOP. Salazar drubbed Tipton 62 percent to 37 percent.

As of this morning, Tipton held a 49 percent to 47 percent lead.

Among those supporting Tipton is Tim Salazar, 66, of Olathe, a Democrat who’s no relation to the congressman.

Tim Salazar said he supported John Salazar in his three previous races, but not this year.

“The country doesn’t seem to be getting better so I decided we needed a change,” Tim Salazar said. “People are losing their jobs, losing their homes. It’s just not right and I don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel.”

John Salazar is a farmer from Manassa whose brother, Ken, is head of the Department of the Interior. Tipton is a Cortez businessman who serves in the state House.

All running in the 3rd is Libertarian Gregory Gilman and Jake Segrest, who is unaffiliated.
