The Colorado Mammoth announced Friday that assistant coach Ed Comeau has been named Team Canada’s coach for the world indoor lacrosse tournament in Prague next May.

“I am honored to be selected as head coach,” said the 45-year-old Hamilton, Ontario, resident. “I look forward to working with the rest of the coaches, the management team and the Canadian Lacrosse Association as we assemble the team that will represent Canada in Prague.”

Comeau also was on the coaching staff of Canada’s world champion 2006 field team and has coached in the National Lacrosse League for the past 13 years, earning honors as GM and coach of the year along the way.

More than 75 players are bidding for roster spots on Team Canada. Scouting begins with the NLL season in January. After selections are announced in the spring, a camp will be held in Prague before the start of the world tournament.

CC’s Perkins, Swan honored.

Colorado College senior outside hitter Emily Perkins was named Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference player of the year, while Rick Swan earned coach of the year honors, for their efforts in leading the Tigers to a share of first place and the top seed at this weekend’s SCAC volleyball tournament.

Perkins, a Division II first-team All-American in 2009 as a junior, leads the Tigers in kills (2.96 per set) and points (3.61). She’s second in digs (3.34), as well as third in hitting percentage (.268) and total blocks (0.64). During the regular season, she ranked third in the SCAC in kills per set and seventh in hitting percentage.

Swan, now in his 13th season at CC, led the 10th-ranked Tigers to a 14-1 conference mark and a 27-6 overall record. He needs only four victories to reach No. 300 during his tenure.

RMAC athletes of October: Akindele, Schmelzle.

Colorado Mines men’s soccer forward Tesho Akindele and Fort Lewis women’s soccer goalkeeper Christine Schmelzle have been named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference athletes of the month for October.

Akindele, a freshman forward from Thornton, put together a historic performance during October that was capped off with a stretch of three consecutive games with a hat trick. As a result, he is featured in the most recent issue of Sports Illustrated in the Faces in the Crowd section. Akindele became the first player in the history of RMAC men’s soccer to record three consecutive hat tricks.

A senior from Flagstaff, Ariz., Schmelzle allowed only four goals in nine games during October, leading the Skyhawks to an 8-0-1 record (all league matches). She played 815 minutes between the posts and earned a 0.44 goals-against average in October, while making 39 saves on 43 shots (.907 save percentage). She posted four shutouts in nine games, bringing her career total to 21 (second-best in school history).
