WASHINGTON — House Democratic leaders signaled a desire Sunday to avoid internal leadership battles in an effort to forge party unity. Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., said efforts are underway to avert an ideological leadership campaign that would pit House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., and Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C., against each other for the position of minority whip after the decision by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to seek to remain in power next year as minority leader.
