The Colorado Mines men’s soccer team claimed the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament championship in a penalty-kick shootout, 7-6 over Fort Lewis on Sunday in Golden.
After 110 minutes, Mines held a 12-to-9 advantage in shots, but with no score, the game went to penalty kicks. Both teams made all five kicks to start the shootout, requiring extra kicks. Mines goalie Manville Strand stopped Jordan Alexander’s attempt on the second kick, and Mines’ Sean Helster then scored the winner.
Froehlich fuels Regis.
Kelsey Froehlich’s penalty kick with 28:38 left lifted Regis (15-5-1) to its first RMAC women’s soccer tournament championship since 2003. Regis defeated Fort Lewis (17-2-1) 2-1 at Dirks Field in Durango. With the win, the Rangers secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs.
Dinwiddie picks Buffs.
Spencer Dinwiddie, a 6-foot-4 point guard from Woodland Hills (Calif.) Taft, has committed to sign with Colorado, reported. Dinwiddie said he picked CU over offers from Oregon, Harvard and UNLV. The eight-day early signing period for basketball begins Wednesday and runs through Nov. 17.
