MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Vermont Yankee nuclear plant was shut down Sunday so technicians could fix a leak where radioactive water was seeping from a pipe leading to the reactor. Plant spokesman Larry Smith said the radioactive water was contained and that there was no threat to public health or safety.
Meanwhile, a transformer exploded and started a fire at the Indian Point power plant in Buchanan, N.Y., leading to an emergency shutdown of one reactor. An official said no one was injured in Sunday’s explosion and that the transformer was not near the reactor.
