Local Alpine mountaineer Alan Arnette, 54, of Fort Collins today kicks off a year-long campaign to climb the 7 Summits, the highest peak on each continent, to raise money for Alzheimer’s research in honor of his late mother.

A former Hewlett-Packard executive, Arnette will start with a two-week trip to the 16,067-foot Mount Vinson Massif in Antarctica. In “The 7 Summits Climb for Alzheimer’s: Memories are Everything” campaign, Arnette hopes to show how the mental and physical challenges of scaling peaks are similar to the trials faced by people with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. His goal is to raise $1 million to advance Alzheimer’s research.
