The Boulder County district attorney’s office filed an additional assault charge Monday against a 22-year-old Lafayette man arrested last month in connection with an alleged hate crime against two men of Nigerian descent on University Hill.
Joseph Coy already faced charges of third-degree assault, bias- motivated crime and obstructing a peace officer. When he appeared in a Boulder County courtroom Monday morning, a second-degree assault charge was added after medical records for the alleged victim, Olubiyi Ogundipe, showed his injuries were more serious than first thought.
Zachrey Harris, 21, also was arrested on suspicion of harassment and bias-motivated crime in connection with the Sept. 18 attack.
Coy and Harris are suspected of punching University of Colorado student Ogundipe in the face after calling him and another man from Nigeria “monkeys” and other racial slurs, police reported. Daily Camera
