SNOWMASS VILLAGE, Colo.—Crews excavating a site in western Colorado where several ancient animals have been found have removed a 7-foot- mastodon tusk.

A volunteer from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science first noticed the tusk Monday as crews watched for fossils while bulldozers removed layers of sediment. Crews worked Tuesday to remove the tusk as snow fell at the Snowmass Village site.

Experts from the U.S. Geological Survey are at the excavation area to help museum crews understand how the ancient lake filled with sediment and how long it took.

Museum crews have discovered bones of mastodons, mammoths, a giant ground sloth and an ancient bison since a bulldozer operator working on expansion of a reservoir unearthed bones in October.
