LAS VEGAS—Former U.S. Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt is among environmental leaders gathering in Nevada to emphasize protection of wildlife habitat as federal managers chart plans for solar and wind energy projects across the West.

Babbitt served under President Bill Clinton and is an advocate for the Colorado-based Conservation Lands Foundation. He joined Friends of Red Rock Canyon and others at the “Friends Rendezvous” that began in Las Vegas on Friday.

Babbitt says it won’t be easy to tap new energy while at the same time preserving wildlife, native cultural sites and landscape views.

But he told the Las Vegas Review-Journal it can be done if the Bureau of Land Management adopts better policies to ensure those treasures coexist with development of solar, wind and geothermal power on public lands.
