You don’t have to be a redneck — or even smarter than a fifth-grader — to appreciate Jeff Foxworthy’s brand of humor.
People were howling with laughter when he joked about in-laws, Southerners and bodily functions at Girls Night Out, the annual dinner and comedy show benefiting Girls Inc. of Metro Denver.
This was the second time that Foxworthy, host of TV’s “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” and one of the country’s most successful comedians, has headlined GNO; he was here in 2005 and was brought back by popular demand.
Becky Gutrich, Kim Laycob and Julia Simon chaired the event held at the Hyatt Regency Tech Center. Chris Parente, a Fox-31/KWGN personality and comedian in his own right, was master of ceremonies; Cydney and Tom Marsico were the Premiere Sponsors, and honorary chairs were Barb Ingalls, Brooke Parker and Linda Smith.
The 900 guests were greeted by Ann Stern and Lauren Naylor, co-presidents of the Girls Inc. Alliance, and Carol Bowar, the agency’s president/CEO. Isabel Keegan and May Wilson chaired the raffle that had a ticket committee headed by Kim Fallin.Tammy and Chris Marsico were the Title Sponsors, underwriting the souvenir T-shirts that each guest received. Corporate chairs were Kim Haverly and Rachel Romero.
Dinner — thyme-roasted chicken and chocolate “mudslide” milkshakes — was enjoyed by a crowd that included Susan Blake-Smith, Nancy Petry, Cindy Halaby, Pam Diamond, Susan Hagar, Lindy Eichenbaum Lent, Vienna Presley, Michelle Hanley, Sheila Gutterman, Stephanie Riggs, Kathy Schmidt, Mary Osborn, Hanne Lichtenfels, Cindy Schulz, Jeanne Phillips, Mary Spillane, Sara Grace, Cissie Megyesy, Allison Perkins, Lynda Dalton and Hillary Adams, who will chair the 25th anniversary GNO headlined by John Heffron from “Last Comic Standing.” It’s set for Oct. 7, 2011.

The sale of historic Phipps Mansion left Friends of Nursing without a venue for its annual Christmas at Phipps Mansion tour and boutique. So president MaryJo Coast called on Ann Smith and LaFawn Biddle to coordinate a “non-event,” at which those who would have attended the holiday benefit would instead mail in donations for the FON scholarship fund.
