A tax protester who attempted to issue an arrest warrant for a federal judge was sentenced to 27 months in prison today for failing to file tax returns.

A jury found Darrell Stoffels, 59, of Larkspur, guilty on June 22, after 15 minutes of deliberation.

Stoffels was found guilty on three counts of failing to file tax returns in 2003, 2004 and 2005, during which he earned $241,585.

One week before his jury trial, Stoffels attempted to file a bench warrant for U.S. District Judge Christine M. Arguello.

The bench warrant was immediately thrown out on a lack of merit, said Jeff Dorschner, spokesman for the U.S. Department of Justice.

Arguello was the judge who set Stoffels’ sentence today.

According to a release from the U.S. Department of Justice, Stoffels ran a business called Life Enhancement Resources Health Ministry since the early 1990s and sold nutritional supplements.

According to the release, in credit applications that Stoffels filled out to buy and lease vehicles in 2004 and 2006, Stoffels stated that his gross monthly income was $25,000, which would be $300,000 annually.
