LARAMIE — The Wyoming and Colorado State football teams were on the losing end of several lopsided scores this season.
Wyoming had to endure losses of 34-7 to Texas, 51-6 to Boise State and 45-0 to Texas Christian. Colorado State was pounded 51-6 by Nevada, 49-10 by Brigham Young and 59-6 by Utah.
Saturday’s game in the CSU-Wyoming Border War rivalry produced another lopsided score. This time, Wyoming was able to enjoy it. The Cowboys’ 44-0 pounding of the Rams was the biggest blowout for Wyoming in the 102-game history of the Border War.
“It’s a great feeling, and it’s been a long time since I have had it,” said Cowboys coach Dave Christensen. “It’s one of those days everything came together for us.”
Both teams had hopes of ending the season with a victory.
Said Wyoming cornerback Tashaun Gipson, a junior from Dallas, “Whether we are 0-10 or 10-0, the Border War is the most important game on our schedule.”
Denied.
Junior linebacker Brian Hendricks had the first touchdown of his Wyoming career ripped from the scoreboard twice.
Early in the second quarter, Wyoming’s Josh Biezuns forced a fumble by Colorado State wide receiver Lou Greenwood. Hendricks picked up the ball and stumbled toward the goal line, but video review changed the play to an incomplete pass.
Hendricks, a former Burlington star, appeared bound for a TD a second time later in the game. But an official blew his whistle on a fumble by CSU’s Tyson Liggett.
“We won 44-0,” Hendricks said. “Those two plays that happened, I forgot about them right away. That would have been nice to get those extra scores, but 44-0 . . . I can’t complain at all.”
A leg up.
Sophomore punter Pete Kontodiakos looked like CSU’s only star Saturday at War Memorial Stadium. He averaged 47.1 yards on nine punts. His longest punt traveled 69 yards. The Rams nearly had as many punts in the game as first downs (13).
