“Eat Pray Love”
Julia Roberts may be the absolute right star to portray seeker Liz Gilbert in the adaptation of the latter’s blockbuster memoir. But the talented Ryan Murphy and co-writer Jennifer Salt weren’t the best duo to bring the spiritual-romantic adventure of self-recovery and discovery to full-on fruition. Jetting from Italy to India to Indonesia, the film is often gorgeous. And there are some nice turns by the menfolk (especially Richard Jenkins) but the “pray” part of the title gets muted in a film that is less “Siddhartha” than “Under the Tuscan Sky” with a lot more frequent flyer miles. PG-13, 2 hours, 13 minutes. Lisa Kennedy
“The Expendables”
Talk about your counter-programming. Sylvester Stallone directs, co-writes and stars in this Y chromosome-fueled chopper ride down memory lane. If you’re tasting strong hints of late ’80s action, you know the vintage. Barney (Stallone) & Co. (Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren to name a few) head to a fictional Latin American country where a general (David Zaya) and a slithery former CIA sort (Eric Roberts) run roughshod over the people. Does anyone else get a kick out of the fact the Roberts siblings — Julia and Eric — are in such diametrically storied films opening the same day? “The Expendables” is absurdly, embarrassingly violent but it comes with a rich Mickey Rourke moment. R, 1 hour, 43 minutes. Lisa Kennedy
“Flipped”
A tale of very young love and loss set in the ’60s. Juli and Bryce live in white, middle-class suburbia. We follow the kids through the ups and downs of grade school, family life and their growing (or not) attraction. Both young actors find that ideal balance of charm and intelligence without veering into too precocious and too pretty. PG. 1 hour, 28 minutes. Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times
