Firefighters responding to a house fire near Federal Boulevard and Mississippi Avenue were greeted with a chaotic scene late Sunday night, according to Denver Fire Department.
Lt. Phil Champagne, a spokesman with Denver Fire, says fire crews arriving at the home in the 1000 block of South Grove Street just before 11 p.m. found the yard filled with residents.
He says 12 people live in the home and were all able to safely escape, but were standing in front of the house as firefighters began their work. Champagne says many of the residents did not speak English, making it difficult for firefighters to communicate with them.
Champagne says the home was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. As they were fighting the blaze, a live power line dropped onto one of the fire hoses, burning through it. Two people – a woman and her 2-year-old child – were burned in the fire and had to be taken to a local hospital for treatment. There is no word on what condition they are in or the severity of their burns.
