BOULDER, Colo.—The University of Colorado in Boulder is experiencing a boom in bicycle thefts, with police reporting a 250 percent jump from last year.
Police tell The Colorado Daily that about 200 bikes have been reported stolen since Aug. 1, compared with 57 for the same period a year ago.
CU police suspect a bike theft ring. Cmdr. Tim McGraw says police don’t believe it’s just random thieves, but they haven’t been able to determine patterns in locations or times.
The campus police department is working on a plan to stem the thefts and are increasing patrols near bike racks.
