BOULDER — Students at the University of Colorado are having to amp up their bike security after a major increase in bike thefts across campus this fall.

CU police Cmdr. Tim McGraw said about 200 bikes have been reported stolen on campus since Aug. 1, compared with 57 during the same period last year.

“This (semester) has been atypically high,” McGraw said. “It’s been at least five years since we’ve seen anything like this.”

McGraw said authorities suspect a bike theft ring is responsible for the sudden jump in stolen bikes.

“This is not just random people stealing bikes,” he said. “It’s more organized than that.”
