GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The Mesa County coroner’s office says a Grand Junction man found dead in his home after a fire broke out was smoking a cigarette while using oxygen.

The coroner tells KJCT-TV that 69-year-old Ronald Kennon died Wednesday from carbon monoxide poisoning due to smoke and soot inhalation. His death has been ruled an accident.

Firefighters tell The Daily Sentinel that the fire was confined to the living room, where the man’s body was found.

Kennon’s son-in-law, Jim Hautamaki, says Kennon was a widower who lived alone and had a series of health problems.
