CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Al Golden, who led a resurgence at Temple, was hired as Miami’s football coach Sunday. Golden replaces Randy Shannon, who was fired Nov. 27 after the Hurricanes completed a 7-5 regular season and fell to 28-22 in his four seasons at his alma mater.
Temple went 3-31 in the three seasons before Golden arrived in 2006; the Owls were 1-11 in his first season there, then won 26 games over the past four years.
Golden received a five-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the total value of the deal was expected to be worth up to $2 million annually.
• Urban Meyer is walking away from his head-coaching position at Florida because of health concerns, according to The Gainesville Sun.
Meyer has a recurring burning sensation in his chest that doctors told him last week would raise cardiovascular risk factors if he continued to coach. Meyer announced his resignation Wednesday and said health was not the reason he was walking away. He said he wanted to spend more time with his family.
• Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn agreed to become Vanderbilt’s coach, according to The Washington Post. The Commodores have been searching for a new coach since Robbie Caldwell resigned Nov. 27.
• Louisiana-Lafayette hired Mississippi State assistant Mark Hudspeth as its coach. He replaces Rickey Bustle, fired after a 3-9 season.
Davis’ streak in 1,000 ends
OBIHIRO, Japan — Olympic champion Shani Davis finally lost at 1,000 meters in the speedskating World Cup, ending the American’s 15-race winning streak.
Samuel Schwarz of Germany won the event in 1 minute, 9.98 seconds, edging Davis by 0.17 of a second.
Davis’ streak dated to March 2009, when he was beaten by U.S. teammate Trevor Marsicano.
American Heather Richardson earned her second consecutive win in the women’s 1,000, clocking 1:17.27 to beat Nao Kodaira of Japan by 0.5.
Johnson-Poulter win Shootout
NAPLES, Fla. — Dustin Johnson and Ian Poulter won the Shark Shootout, shooting a 13-under-par 59 in the scramble format to beat Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell (59—188) by two shots.
• Pablo Martin survived a triple bogey to successfully defend his Alfred Dunhill Championship title in Malelane, South Africa, shooting a 2-under 70 for an 11-under 277 total and two-shot victory.
• Australia’s Peter Senior, 51, won the rain-delayed Australian PGA today in Coolum, beating Geoff Ogilvy with a par on the second hole of a playoff to become the oldest player to win a major professional tournament in Australia.
