The annual ice fishing contest at Antero Reservoir in honor of the late Bob Taylor, Denver Water’s first manager of recreation and an avid angler, is Jan. 15 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Fishermen will compete for prizes of $500, $250 and $100, plus numerous door prizes.

Early registration costs $20 per person. Event-day registration will be $30 per contestant.

The goal is to raise $10,000, all of which will go directly to fishery and recreation improvements at the reservoir.

The contest was an annual event until the reservoir was drained in 2002. The lake reopened in 2007 with spectacular fishing, and the contest was revived last year through the efforts of Denver Water, the Colorado Division of Wildlife and the Coalition for the Upper South Platte. Also coming.

The Colorado Classic Grand Slam ice fishing tournament hosted by 11 Mile Marina in conjunction with Eleven Mile State Park is Jan. 8. The event offers competition for two-person teams in categories for trout, kokanee salmon and northern pike.

Cash prizes will be awarded for each fish category and other side contests.

For more information, go to or call the marina at 719-748-0317.

Cheesman road closure.

Forest Service Road 211, leading from Jefferson County Road 126 to Cheesman Reservoir, is closed through Saturday. The closure is necessary to accommodate construction work to replace a culvert on Wigwam Creek that was severely damaged by flooding in 2009.

With the nearby lower Gill Trail parking area, the only authorized parking site in the vicinity, also closed, fishing access to the South Platte River in Cheesman Canyon will be practically impossible until the road reopens. At that time, the upper canyon, accessible from the reservoir by a much steeper trail segment, again will be available.
