An effort to allow overnight parking in Denver’s downtown moved a step closer after Denver’s City Council on Monday approved a bill on its first reading to change the meter time limits.

Currently, cars are banned from parking on downtown streets from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.

The new ordinance would change that beginning early next year, allowing people to plug the meters overnight — for a total cost of $7 from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Officials believe overnight parking could mean fewer intoxicated drivers getting behind the wheel to move their parked cars because of the existing ordinance.

Initially, the plan was to begin overnight metering at 8 p.m., but the proposal may be changed to move the start time to 10 p.m. after concerns from the business community.

The council will consider the proposal for a final vote Dec. 20.
