BOULDER, Colo.—A Muslim woman who refused to remove her headscarf for a Boulder County jail booking photo will be allowed to keep it on for a photo ID.

Boulder County jail spokesman Bruce Haas says 19-year-old Maria Hardman will be allowed to keep her scarf if it’s pulled behind her ears.

Hardman of Boulder, who says she converted to Islam three years ago, pleaded guilty to an alcohol violation and was sentenced to two days in jail and community service. She refused to remove her scarf for an ID picture for a work crew.

The Daily Camera reported that a judge ruled Monday allowing Hardman to have her photo taken in a separate room with no men around would adequately protect her religious beliefs.
