A Colorado State Patrol trooper was injured Friday morning in a multi- vehicle crash on Interstate 25 north of Pueblo, marking the second accident in less than 48 hours in which a trooper was hurt.

Trooper Brian Kohnlein was working a crash about 8 miles north of Pueblo on Friday when a string of crashes unfolded, said Sgt. John Hahn, a State Patrol spokesman.

“The trooper was out of his patrol car assisting the passenger of a vehicle that struck the guardrail when that car was hit and pushed into him,” Hahn said.

Kohnlein, of Pueblo, suffered “moderate” injuries and was taken to a local hospital, Hahn said.

The crashes occurred about 5:15 a.m. on both sides of the highway and the highway was shutdown, Hahn said. The highway was “slick” at the time and the crashes, which involved at least eight vehicles, were likely the result of people driving too fast for the conditions.

On Wednesday afternoon, Trooper Markus Winter was assisting a driver on Interstate 70 near Frisco when a Dodge pickup lost control, struck Winter’s car and pushed it into him. Winter sustained moderate injuries. Kieran Nicholson, The Denver Post
