Sprint Nextel Corp. said its chief financial officer will retire soon, and the company will import Qwest’s finance chief to replace him.

Sprint said Joseph Euteneuer will move over from Qwest when that company’s merger with CenturyLink Inc. is completed. When that happens, current CFO Bob Brust will retire.

Brust had been CFO at Sprint since May 2008, before that spending 2000 to 2007 with Eastman Kodak Co., where he was also CFO.

Euteneuer was named CFO at Qwest in September 2008 after working as CFO from 2002 to 2008 for XM Satellite Radio Holdings, which merged into Sirius XM Radio Inc.

He also has held various management positions with Comcast Corp.

Euteneuer will be based at Sprint’s corporate headquarters in Overland Park, Kan.

“Joe has an excellent reputation in the industry and has a strong background in a variety of financial disciplines, including finance and accounting, mergers and acquisitions, and financial operations,” said Sprint chief executive Dan Hesse.

Sprint said in October that its third-quarter loss widened, missing analysts’ forecasts, as the company saw its biggest net subscriber gain since 2006 but continued to lose postpaid customers.

Shares of Sprint were recently up 6 cents to $4.33. The stock has risen 19 percent this year.
