ALLENSPARK — Some residents of the mountain village of Allenspark are concerned that a federal forest-thinning project took out too many large trees.

The residents agree the trees around their Boulder County town need to be thinned because fire-suppression efforts have left the forest too dense, the Boulder Daily Camera reported.

They say the 390-acre project took out the largest and rarest trees from the ponderosa pine forest.

The U.S. Forest Service says the goal is a mix of younger and older trees that is representative of a more natural forest.

Forest Service officials have agreed to take the residents’ concerns into account and review plans for future thinning projects. The Associated Press
