“The American”
** 1/2 (out of 4)
A consummate maker of guns for hired assassins, Jack (George Clooney) finds himself in the cross hairs. Based on Martin Booth’s decidedly British novel “A Very Private Gentleman” (2004), this outing is a visually elegant, measured thriller about the ambivalence of a killer. In the tradition of “one last job,” Jack is set up by his employer with a final gig once he arrives in a picturesque Italian village. Clooney gives a disciplined turn as the lethal craftsman who is befriended by a philosophical priest. Yet the film misfires ever so slightly as it limns his relationships with two women: the lovely prostitute Clara (Violante Placido) and mysterious client Mathilde (Thekla Reuten).
