Rural Weld County homeowner Mike Morgan, a Mormon bishop, used his background in his church to try to talk sense into a disturbed, armed man who burst into his home off 37th Street west of 83rd Avenue.
Greeley police said Scott Walker, 47, of Arizona entered Morgan’s home about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday after apparently leaving his semi parked in the middle of an intersection at 47th Avenue and 29th Street. He is accused of taking off with a Comcast truck and driving through a locked gate in front of Morgan’s home.
“He said he was prepared to meet Jesus,” Morgan told reporters after the event, which reportedly included the suspect shooting at Weld County Sheriff’s Office Cmdr. Bill Spalding, missing him by inches.
“I said, ‘I’m a bishop.’ . . . I engaged him in conversation, and I said, ‘What’s wrong? Can I help you? No matter what’s wrong, I promise you I can help you.’ “
Morgan was on the phone with his wife when the man entered his home, initially asking him to fly him away in his helicopter. Morgan doesn’t have one.
Morgan said his wife called 911 from Vail to report the intruder.
