Avalanche defenseman Kyle Cumiskey, who has missed the past 25 games with a concussion, is scheduled to travel with the team to Edmonton today.
The 24-year-old won’t play against the Oilers on Thursday or at Calgary on Friday, but having him on the trip is a positive sign that he is close to returning to the lineup for the first time since Oct. 30.
“He’s going to start skating with us (but) we’re going to break him in slowly,” Avs coach Joe Sacco said after today’s practice. “It’s a positive sign. It’s good for him to be around the guys. He hasn’t been around the team for a long time, so it’s good for him.”
Cumiskey, an excellent skater who had a goal and five points his first 11 games this season, skated on his own before practice today. He was not available for comment.
Sacco said power forward Chris Stewart, who led the team in goal-scoring before breaking his hand Nov. 27, continues to skate on his own but is not scheduled to travel this week.
Stewart is nearing the beginning of the four-to-six week, post-surgery recovery window the team said he would require.
“There’s no timetable for Stewey yet,” Sacco said. “I don’t know the exact date he’ll return.”
