PUEBLO, Colo.—A newborn baby was handed over to firefighters in Pueblo on Christmas Eve, the first baby to be relinquished in the county under Colorado’s Safe Haven Law.

The Pueblo Chieftain reports that the baby boy was brought to a fire station about 30 minutes after his birth by a relative of the mother.

Fire department spokesman Woody Percival said firefighters asked for permission to see the mother and she ended up going to the hospital to be checked out, along with the baby.

Since 2000, Colorado has allowed parents to give up babies within 72 hours of their birth at fire stations or hospital emergency rooms. The Pueblo baby is the 31st in the state to be relinquished since the law was passed.
