The ice axes will be in full swing again this weekend as some 4,000 winter-loving outdoorsmen (and women) descend upon the tranquil town of Ouray to ascend the frozen faces of the Ouray Ice Park.
The 16th annual Ouray Ice Festival kicks off with a “Locals’ Night” slide show, presentation and party at the Ouray Brewery on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., followed by climbing competition Friday and Saturday.
The Treadwall Speed Climbing Challenge joins the Ice Axe Throwing Challenge and International Climbing Competition this year.
The festival also includes 60 climbing seminars for all levels (including activities for kids) and climbing-gear demos.
Contest and clinic fees pay for more than half the annual operating capital for the Ouray Ice Park, which is among the premier ice-climbing arenas in the world.
