The thing about snowshoeing is that you need more than just snowshoes. You need actual shoes too. Realistically, boots.

That’s where Garmont’s new Momentum Snow GTX boots (MSRP: $140) come in. These waterproof winter boots are high-performance tools disguised as light hikers.

They are lightweight — weighing about 550 grams (or less than a bottle of beer) each — while somehow managing to insulate to temperatures as low as 25 below. A full Gore-Tex membrane keeps feet dry, and a high cuff and gusseted tongue fend off drifting snow. A grippy rubber outsole offers ample traction (even on ice) with or without the addition of snowshoes, for those interested in simply hitting the streets of Denver.
