BUFFALO, N.Y. — Artemi Panarin scored twice and Russia overcame a three-goal deficit in the third period to stun Canada 5-3 in the gold-medal game of the World Junior Hockey Championships on Wednesday night.

Yevgeni Kuznetsov had three assists as Russia scored five times in a 16:11 span to win its first gold medal since 2003 — and 13th overall.

Earlier, Chris Kreider scored twice, University of Denver sophomore Drew Shore gave the Americans a lead they would not surrender and Jack Campbell made 34 saves as the United States defeated Sweden 4-2 in the bronze-medal game.

After winning gold in 2010, the Americans won medals in consecutive years for the first time since this tournament began in 1977.

The Americans took their first lead of the game on Shore’s goal just 52 seconds into the third period that made it 2-1. In front of the net, he was able to deflect Justin Faulk’s shot from the top of the right circle.

Nick Bjugstad made it 3-1 with a deflection in front, and Campbell kept the Swedes at bay to improve to 16-2-1 in International Ice Hockey Federation games.
