A Greeley man crashed his vehicle in downtown Greeley early Sunday morning during a pursuit by Weld County sheriff’s officers after reaching speeds of 100 mph and later walked out of North Colorado Medical Center still attached to the IV stand, said Margie Martinez, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff’s officers arrested James Ortega, 23, Sunday afternoon after family members brought him back to the hospital and he was treated and released.

Greeley police officers initially tried to pull a car over for reckless driving but backed off on the pursuit, which was resumed by sheriff’s officers. The driver then crashed about 12:30 a.m. after he hit the median on 8th Avenue between 8th and 9th streets in Greeley, where he took down a sign and three trees. Officers took him to NCMC for his injuries.

Martinez said Ortega then apparently walked out of the hospital wearing nothing but his robe and still attached to the IV stand.

Ortega faces several possible charges, including driving under the influence and other traffic charges. It was unknown whether he will be charged with theft of the IV stand.
