DENVER—Colorado health authorities say they’ll hear from a mine owner this week about how it plans to correct water contamination at a mine near Crested Butte.

The Denver Post reports that state health department water-quality officials expect to hear from U.S. Energy Corp. about water contamination near the Mount Emmons mine. The company must respond to the state by Wednesday.

State water quality director Steve Gunderson says the company will be expected to clean up contamination. Water near the mine is contaminated with cadmium, aluminum and zinc.

Colorado mining regulators already have granted U.S. Energy a prospecting permit to work one of the world’s largest and purest known deposits of molybdenum.
