ATHENS, Ga.—A Nobel Laureate in chemistry will speak at the University of Georgia this month.

Thomas R. Cech, a chemistry professor from the University of Colorado at Boulder who won the 1989 Nobel Prize for chemistry, will lecture Jan. 18 at 4 p.m. and again Jan. 19 at 4 p.m. He will speak on interdisciplinary research in education and talk about his research on ribonucleic acid—or RNA—one of the macromolecules essential for life.

Cech and his research group were the first to show that RNA is not simply a passive carrier of genetic information but also has active, catalytic roles.

Both lectures will be in the Mahler Auditorium of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education Conference Center and Hotel. They are free and open to the public.
