DENVER—U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder is praising John Walsh as the newly installed U.S. attorney in Colorado as showing the leadership needed in “times like these of inexplicable loss.”

Holder’s statement Thursday at a ceremony in Denver marking Walsh’s installation was a reference to the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona. Holder spoke Wednesday at a service in Tucson, Ariz., for the others shot, six of whom died, as the congresswoman met with the public over the weekend.

Holder says such incidents bring the Justice Department’s mission to protect into stark focus.

Walsh was sworn in as U.S. attorney in Colorado in August. He replaced David Gaouette (GOW’-ett), who served from January 2009 until last August.
