GREELEY, Colo.—The president of a Colorado trade group says Weld County is sitting on top of what could be a world-class oil and natural gas play.
The Greeley Tribune reports that Tish Conoly-Schuller of the Colorado Oil and Gas Association told a group of county business and government leaders Thursday that most of the drilling in Colorado’s portion of the Niobrara formation will likely happen in their area.
The formation is about 7,000 feet underground and spreads across northeast Colorado, southwest Nebraska and southeast Wyoming, where oil production has increased. Conoly-Schuller says so far, at least 70 percent of the production from the Niobrara shale is oil.
Weld County has 16,195 active oil and gas wells, 37 percent of the wells in Colorado.
