With daytime temperatures nearing 50 degrees, Boulder fire crews have gone on three rescue calls in the last two days for unleashed dogs that wandered onto icy bodies of water and fell through.
All three were rescued with the help of firefighters who had to go out on the ice to pull them out, city officials said in a release.
“We care about dogs, but every time a firefighter goes out onto the ice, we are taking a risk,” said Battalion Chief Gil Espinoza.
One rescue was at Admiral Arleigh A. Burke Park at Mohawk and Pawnee drives and the two others were at a lake near Table Mesa and South Loop drives.
Officials are advising residents to leash their dogs near water. They also note that ice that isn’t thick enough to support a dog won’t support a person and that they should call 9-1-1 rather than putting themselves at risk to save their pet.
