Highlights from the Legislature on Wednesday:
— Republicans and Democrats started work on a congressional redistricting plan. Lawmakers hope to agree to the plan by April. If not, they may have to come back in a special session this summer, because lawmakers are required by law to redraw congressional lines every 10 years.
— Preservationists launched a campaign to solicit private donations to cover $8 million needed to complete repairs to the Capitol’s aging cast-iron dome.
— As expected, two dozen Republicans introduced an Arizona-style immigration crackdown. The bill would allow police to arrest people they suspect are in the country illegally.
New Bills:
— Allow police to arrest someone they suspect may be an illegal immigrant (SB54).
— Require public schools to set aside time for physical education (HB69).
— Regulate inflatable play structures such as “bouncy castles” (SB75).
— Require interior designers to get state licenses before applying for a building permit (SB67).
— Repeal renewable energy standards approved in 2008 (SB71).
